Mayo’s second Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week, which takes place next week (from November 12 to 16), will see a packed programme of activities and information events rolled out across the county, putting drugs and particularly alcohol under the spotlight. Large crowds attend family fun day in Claremorris

Mayo Integration Forum held a family fun day last weekend in Claremorris. The forum comprises migrant representatives, Mayo County Development Board, Mayo Sports Partnership, Mayo Intercultural Action, Mayo County Childcare Committee, and other agencies and groups. One of the main goals of the forum is to promote active integration of people from different countries of origin who chose Ireland as their home. The event was organised to encourage integration of diverse communities through active sport interaction and cultural exchange.

Child protection in sport, sports first aid, sports leadership training, club development workshops and leader training for older people groups are just some of the upcoming sports volunteer training courses which will be available through Mayo Sports Partnership over the coming months.

Sport and physical activity grants for older people

Go for Life has launched its annual grant scheme for older groups and clubs. Almost €300,000 has been allocated to this year's scheme, organised by Go for Life and the Irish Sports Council. Groups and clubs of older people all over the country can apply for grants to spend on equipment, to get an instructor in for a few sessions, or to organise a sports fest in their area. Typical amounts awarded are between €300 and €700 and the grants generally go to active retirement associations, senior citizens clubs, ICA guilds, day centres, and community centres.

Men on the Move launched in Erris

Last Wednesday saw the launch of the Men on the Move programme in Erris by Minister of Sport Michael Ring, local sporting hero Henry Coyle WBF Light Middleweight Champion of the World, Charlie Lambert from Mayo Sports Partnership, and members of the Erris Men’s Shed.
